Council of Ministries Approves Data Protection Act Regulations
The Council of Ministers of the Federal Government of Somalia has officially approved the Regulations issued under the Somalia Data Protection Act (Law No. 005/2023), marking a significant milestone in strengthening the country’s data protection and privacy framework.
The Regulations were presented to the Council by the Minister of Communications and Technology and approved by a majority vote. They establish clear procedures governing the collection, storage, use, and protection of personal data, with the aim of enhancing privacy, data security, and public trust in digital services.
Following the approval, the Director General of the Somalia Data Protection Authority welcomed the decision, noting that the Regulations fully empower the Authority to carry out its regulatory, supervisory, and enforcement functions in accordance with the law.
The Regulations are expected to play a critical role in protecting the rights of individuals and supporting Somalia’s alignment with international best practices and standards in data protection and data security.
